MS research in Alberta is active, innovative and leading edge. Researchers at the Universities of Alberta and Calgary work together to investigate how the disease occurs, how to improve damaged nerves, and how to repair the nervous system that has been ravaged by the abnormalities in MS. Pioneering work at the University of Alberta includes studies of how the insulation around nerve fi bres, called myelin, is damaged in MS, by Dr. Marek Michalak; how infections cause MS, by Dr. Chris Power; the basis of chronic pain in MS, by Dr. Bradley Kerr; the processes by which immune cells attack nerve cells, by Dr. Fabrizio Giuliani; and in partnership with clinicians, Dr. Alan Wilman applies advanced physics to understanding the changes in the brain during MS using MRI.
